Hemispheres: More work to be done

In 2014 I was honored to begin working with Barclay Martin and Unbound to develop a strategy and curate a new project. We wanted to use photographs, video, and music to bring awareness to the good work that the organization does throughout the world (Unbound is currently working in 21 developing countries).

We had our inaugural show in November at The Living Room Theatre, where we had a great setting, beautiful lighting, amazing live music, and projections done by the incomparable Quixotic Fusion. We had a packed house, a great response, and it was a success on every measure.

But, there is more work for this project to do!

Having long admired both the creative and philanthropic work of my good friend Barclay Martin, I have actively been looking for an opportunity for us to collaborate. It finally presented itself when I was given the chance to curate an exhibit and help develop a strategy for raising awareness about Unbound and their latest recording project highlighting the musical gifts of the Unbound community in Madagascar.

I think the first conversation went something like, “We are going to release a cd of music without any of the musicians present. It is really amazing, but how do we make anyone care?” Well, my treasured friend I believe we did it! Continue reading »

Make artists part of your holiday tradition!

Last year between Thanksgiving and Christmas I encouraged you to “Buy Personal” and embarked on introducing you to some of our friends. It was so much fun and a great way to spend some time thinking about and being thankful for all of the amazingly talented friends we have. This year I am no less thankful and it is no less important that you support independent artists of all varieties while making your holiday plans. But I’ve got to tell you, that was a herculean task to take on while still maintaining my studio practice. Generous, Compassionate, Humble

You know those people that you meet that just seem too nice to be for real? Too good to be true? And way too talented to really be so humble. Yep, we were skeptical as we were getting to know our now good friend Barclay Martin. And, I have to admit, I retained a bit of that disbelief until I got to know his parents, and I understood where a person like this might come from.
