Idaho to Nashville

Kyle and I are ridiculously lucky that most of the time we are on this crazy artistic adventure side by side; in the art studio, in the van, at his shows, at my shows, hearing his rehearsals through the kitchen door.

But this week was different as we took on our own adventures

Almost immediately after our show in Sun Valley, Idaho Kyle flew, as if by slingshot, across the country to Nashville to record with our good friends Victor and Penny for their upcoming album. I stayed behind in the Wood River Valley for a few days of camping, biking and READING. While solo camping has given me ample time for reading (2 books in 4 days!) and I am super proud of the music they are recording, I am really ready for his return so we can continue this adventure together…Montana here we come!

Stu-stu-studio Time!

Sorry for the absence of blog posts we have just a few weeks of studio time between trips and we are both making the most of it!

Kyle is back in the recording studio with his band The Hardship Letters to finish up recording their debut album. The first four songs sound amazing and their live performance last night sounded better than ever. If those are an indication of what we can expect from the album we are in for a treat!

And I’ve just completed the digital mock-ups and am waiting for approval on three different commissions. Continue reading »

Happy Birthday to Us!

greetings-from-new-orleans

Kyle and I are soaking up the sights, sounds and flavors of New Orleans for our birthdays. (Thats right, plural, we try to be efficient around here.)

But I wanted to stop by and remind you that January is coming to its end, which means it’s your last chance to be included in the drawing for this piece of artwork in my Be Nice & Do Good campaign.

So how about showing a little birthday love by donating a few bucks to help the Midwest Music Foundation do their good work. In addition to the karmic points you’d be building, maybe you’ll get a present for my birthday! (bonus points for helping spread the word)

Don’t know what the heck I am talking about? Start here.

Make artists part of your holiday tradition!

Last year between Thanksgiving and Christmas I encouraged you to “Buy Personal” and embarked on introducing you to some of our friends. It was so much fun and a great way to spend some time thinking about and being thankful for all of the amazingly talented friends we have. This year I am no less thankful and it is no less important that you support independent artists of all varieties while making your holiday plans. But I’ve got to tell you, that was a herculean task to take on while still maintaining my studio practice. So this year I have chosen to spend more time working on my new series while reintroducing you to the fantastic artists you met last year. Continue reading »

Play like a 10 year old

Kyle and I on 1st bike ride of the year!

Prompted by Gretchen Rubin, author of the Happiness Project (and coincidently the sister of a high-school friend of mine), I have been thinking about my favorite activities when I was 10. Reflecting on how many of them I am doing now, decades later, and if they aren’t in my daily practice, is it possible to add them. Would they still bring me pleasure and happiness? Because frankly, a life lived solely in my art and studio makes me a bore even to myself! Continue reading »

Chasing the rainbow

How did I end up here? (the not so short story I wrote last year for Art Fair Insiders)

I learned to use a camera and work in the darkroom as I was learning to write in cursive and ride a bicycle, and I have been on a photographic journey ever since. Looking through the lens shapes my life and experience of the world. My art, my camera, and my life are inextricable – I am fortunate.

Prior to my professional life, my focus was almost solely on my experience from behind the camera, but as I began working in commercial photography and then in film, I realized the true power the medium could have to influence (manipulate?) the viewer. During this time, I played many roles and the work was wide ranging, from photographing hamburgers for a national fast food chain, or arranging flowers for greeting card covers, to scouting filming locations for shoe store commercials. I loved the day-to-day challenges and problem solving of the field, but the goals of my clients, the advertisers, didn’t fit with my personal values. I was using my craft to sell people goods that were bad for them, the community, and the environment. I was so disheartened by this I almost put my camera down for good. Continue reading »

Experience – Andy Garrison

Andy Garrison

Heya – Kyle breaking in again.  I want to introduce you to someone you really should know, and not just because he’s so tall and charming and handsome (that’s what you wanted me to say, right Andy?).  Andy Garrison is someone I’ve been lucky enough to share a stage with, and luckier still to call a friend.  He’s a multi-talented dude with not only a tremendous gift for acting, but with a love and ability for teaching it as well.  It’s this teaching side that got me thinking about what to give someone that doesn’t want any more stuff, but would appreciate an experience that has the potential for challenge and growth.  It’s a perfect gift for anyone who likes discovering new things about themselves.

Anywho, you’ve been following this series, you’ve been inspired by all these creative types, and you want to try on that hat too.  So what is this magical place to do this, you ask?

My Better Half – Kyle Dahlquist (or “I just can’t shake him!” )

Then (circa 1990)

I’d probably be remiss if I didn’t introduce you to the most talented and influential artist in my life, right?

If you know my artwork then you know just how beautifully – perfectly, he frames it. If you have worked with him you know what an elegant problem solver he is. If you have been in our house you know what a masterpiece he created from floor to ceiling (and hidden in the walls). But until you have seen him on stage, or heard the music that he makes, I would say you don’t really know him. Continue reading »

Money Wolf Music- Tommy Donoho and Justin Penney

Tommy & Justin

Kyle again, and this time I’m here to introduce you to lots of great people by way of two – Tommy Donoho and Justin Penney. These two are the founders and, dare I say, brains, behind Money Wolf Music. This little label is doing really innovative stuff, one of which is fostering cross pollination and collaboration between their artists. They are the label that released Fantoche, the latest album by my group Alacartoona (which makes a most excellent stocking stuffer) (a really, really great one) (seriously). Continue reading »

No people like show people – The Monocle

The Monocle

Hi, Kyle here. Today’s introduction will be done by me.

Why? Because it would be my pleasure to acquaint you with my colleagues and Kansas CIty’s new performing arts group, The Monocle. Their debut production, The Orphans Feast, will have four shows this coming weekend, Nov 30 – Dec 2, and Chris and I will be in the audience of at least one, if not more. Continue reading »
