Colorful Guanajuato

Kyle and I are back in Guanajuato, Mexico for our little winter warm up.

And I have to admit, our entry has been a little tougher this year. Not only because we are missing our friends Cheri and Allen desperately, but also because we both arrived with expectations this year. Both of us have pretty serious amounts of work that we would like to accomplish while we are here. I am shooting a new series for photo-gravure to be displayed at the Perlow-Stevens Gallery this summer, and Kyle has a lot of work to do on his pedal-steel guitar.

And isn’t it precisely these moments when life has a way of throwing a wrench in the system? Continue reading »

Weekly Peace – January 7

Cyber Monday – Lulu Smith

You can still shop personal on Cyber Monday

I don’t know about you, but I opened up my email this morning to a huge pile of online retailers with tantalizing offers for Cyber Monday specials. Amazon, with their monolithic army of marketers and one-click purchasing, has made it exceedingly easy for us to part with our money, but along with it goes much of the sentiment of the season.

So today, I introduce you to another artist that makes it just as easy, but will embue your gift with deeper meaning. You can buy knowing you are supporting her and her family, and not a nameless, faceless corporation. Continue reading »

Peace of the week, Feb 20

Today I am taking a day away from the studio to select artists for Art in the Park in Columbia, MO. Mostly a regional show, I am excited to see what my fellow Missouri artists have to offer. I will also get in a bonus visit at one of my favorite galleries, the Perlow-Stevens Gallery. A great day in the making for sure.

(And my drive to and from Columbia today, 250 miles round trip, will be a little warm up for our drive to Florida next week.)

Best of 2011 #6 – Artistic Expedition

Terra Nullius = No Man’s Land

Every year I try to schedule at least one gallery exhibition, preferably with my long time partner, the Perlow-Stevens Gallery in Columbia, Missouri. Jennifer Perlow and I have the best type of gallerist/artist relationship, one based on a long-standing mutual trust. We are both able and willing to schedule a show up to 18 months in the future with neither of us knowing what my work will be at that point. This year PS Gallery moved to a beautiful new location and I was able to show with them twice. My second show of the year with them, Terra Nullius, I used the opportunity to showcase new work, to push myself further and to explore new questions.

Thank you Jennifer, this was one of the highlights of my year!

Terra Nullius Tryptich

The show Terra Nullius just closed at Perlow-Stevens, but there are still a few pieces remaining. Are you interested in one of these inaugural pieces? We would love to find a home for them all. Please visit the entire series and inquire with Jennifer about pricing and availability. (Although not hanging, they will stay in Columbia until I return from Mexico.)

Perlow-Stevens Gallery in the News

My new series, Terra Nullius, is still showing at the PS:Gallery in Columbia, Missouri. Please go see it if you are anywhere near, this will be the only chance to see it as a full collection.

Jennifer Perlow says in an article in the Columbia Tribune:  (pdf)

Perlow wants people to come in and see how Dahlquist’s art changes so much with the light. “They are quieter and still and lovely…Her intent is to take away enough so that you stop asking where it is. It’s recognizable as a landscape, but it’s not so literal a translation that the viewer begins to try to discern the location of each photo.”
