Looking way back

Maybe you have seen the Facebook challenge that is going around right now. Maybe not if your Facebook feed isn’t stuffed full of artists like mine, but periodically it seems there is a new meme going around fb to fill it with flowers, or art, or kittens (oh wait…it is always filled with kittens). The current one is challenging artists to post three pieces of art everyday for 5 days.

Since I already feel like a constant fountain of art spam I decided to dig a little deeper, at least for today. I went to the very back of a filing cabinet drawer that houses a pile of three-ring binders, with yellowing and crusty masking tape on the spines declaring their contents: photo articles, 10th grade, 11th grade, 12th grade, yearbook, odd jobs, seniors. In them lie roll after roll of negatives and contact sheets from my high school career, which I experienced mostly through the camera. Continue reading »

Hemispheres: More work to be done

In 2014 I was honored to begin working with Barclay Martin and Unbound to develop a strategy and curate a new project. We wanted to use photographs, video, and music to bring awareness to the good work that the organization does throughout the world (Unbound is currently working in 21 developing countries).

We had our inaugural show in November at The Living Room Theatre, where we had a great setting, beautiful lighting, amazing live music, and projections done by the incomparable Quixotic Fusion. We had a packed house, a great response, and it was a success on every measure.

But, there is more work for this project to do!

Unbound: Voices of Madagascar

The Pilot, ©2014 Unbound

Having long admired both the creative and philanthropic work of my good friend Barclay Martin, I have actively been looking for an opportunity for us to collaborate. It finally presented itself when I was given the chance to curate an exhibit and help develop a strategy for raising awareness about Unbound and their latest recording project highlighting the musical gifts of the Unbound community in Madagascar.

I think the first conversation went something like, “We are going to release a cd of music without any of the musicians present. It is really amazing, but how do we make anyone care?” Well, my treasured friend I believe we did it! Continue reading »

“Idleness is to the human mind like rust to iron.” — Ezra Cornell

After years of working with metal, this is the piece (a print on PAPER) I made for this year’s annual show, “Love Rust: A Celebration of Oxidation”  at the Trap Gallery in Columbus Park.  Closing reception for the show will be held Nov 8, 2014

Framed and unframed prints available.

Voices of Unbound: Madagascar

The Voices of Unbound: Madagascar CD

I’m so proud of my friend Barclay Martin for his latest musical project, released yesterday. He, along with fellow musician and audio engineer Giuliano Mingucci, traveled to Madagascar to record and share the music of the Malagasy people. The CD takes you on a journey Continue reading »

Art in the Pearl – Portland

We are out of the woods and (almost) ready to see the fine folks of Portland.
Come see us!

Out of office

I promise I will share more of our tour with you when we get home. For now, time in the woods is too precious to spend it in town chasing the wifi’s.

An Auspicious Start

Day 2 of the 36 day Clampett Northwest Adventure

Kyle and I laughed the whole way through at the absurdity of it all.

When the closest exit to our “incident” advertised food and fuel (and we were hopeful for air), they in fact had none for humans. However, what they did have were llamas, sheep, and donkeys with a vending machine for you to feed them. We found this immensely helpful given our situation! And finally in Twin Falls, the bold claim of “tire installation” really just meant they would loan us a floor jack and and some room in their parking lot.

Four new tires later, changed in the rain in Twin Falls, Idaho in what the national weather service called a “500 year weather event”, we were on our way.

It only gets better from here.

At least it was pretty!

Stu-stu-studio Time!

Sorry for the absence of blog posts we have just a few weeks of studio time between trips and we are both making the most of it!

Kyle is back in the recording studio with his band The Hardship Letters to finish up recording their debut album. The first four songs sound amazing and their live performance last night sounded better than ever. If those are an indication of what we can expect from the album we are in for a treat!

And I’ve just completed the digital mock-ups and am waiting for approval on three different commissions. Continue reading »
