Being Nice and Doing Good with Colectivo TAN 473

Kyle and I are missing our second home and the subject of my new Reliquaries series, Guanajuato, Mexico, a lot this year. Not because of the foot of snow and single digit temperatures here in Kansas City, but because of our beautiful friends there that are doing good work. Since this year we can’t be there to volunteer, we were hoping that you could lend a hand by Being Nice and Doing Good. Find out the campaign details to win free artwork.

What can you win this month besides the smiles on some precious faces? This!

update (3/5): This month’s winner has been selected. Congratulations Bruce!

Happy Birthday to Us!

greetings-from-new-orleans

Kyle and I are soaking up the sights, sounds and flavors of New Orleans for our birthdays. (Thats right, plural, we try to be efficient around here.)

But I wanted to stop by and remind you that January is coming to its end, which means it’s your last chance to be included in the drawing for this piece of artwork in my Be Nice & Do Good campaign.

So how about showing a little birthday love by donating a few bucks to help the Midwest Music Foundation do their good work. In addition to the karmic points you’d be building, maybe you’ll get a present for my birthday! (bonus points for helping spread the word)

Don’t know what the heck I am talking about? Start here.

To me, photography is an art of observation. It’s about finding something interesting in an ordinary place… I’ve found it has little to do with the things you see and everything to do with the way you see them. —  Elliott Erwitt

A Maker

What I make when I’m not in the studio making things…

Long before Etsy and Renegade Craft Fairs made crafting cool I was a maker (Think Deb in Napoleon Dynamite selling her jewelry and key chains door-to-door). For as far back as I can remember, my favorite aisle in the toy store was the long line of craft kits. And I was thrilled by an afternoon spent with a widow from the church gluing sea shells to terra-cotta pots. Pot holders, friendship pins, Christmas ornaments, “wrapped” coat hangers, jams (from the Ocean Pacific days), and anything else I could make with my hands filled my childhood.

Things are still much the same, but luckily for the recipients of my handiwork, the sophistication level has gotten a little better (most of the time!). Continue reading »

Being Nice and Doing Good in January

(Learn how to Be Nice and Do Good)

What can I win besides that good feeling deep in my soul?

Inspired by the dauggereotypes of the early 19th century, for this piece I paired a Polaroid emulsion transfer with copper that I patinated with acids and flame. I worked on this series from 2000 until the end of Polaroid’s production in 2008. Revisiting this piece reminds me how much I appreciate the varied and organic quality of the copper combined with the image. With only half a dozen of these original copper and Polaroid pieces left, and without the means to create more, looking through them again is like visiting old friends.

Be Nice & Do Good

The New Year is full of platitudes and easily dismissed resolutions. High on holiday sweets and delirious from so much love and social interaction, we vow to be better in every way in the upcoming year – to do more, to eat less, to speak up, to slow down, to experience more, to love better.

I am the worst. My list of resolutions is as long as my arm (and if written there perhaps they would stick a little longer). But in the end, it really only amounts to two things: Be Nice and Do Good

Lucky for us, my community is full of people doing exactly that, and by giving them a helping hand we can be one step closer to living our resolutions this year.

So here’s the Deal:

  1. Every month I will select a piece of artwork to give away. (I still have some fabulous pieces from previous series that deserve a great home.)
  2. Continue reading »

Experience Art for the Holidays

I know, I know, you don’t want to hear it, but Christmas is just around the corner. Time is running out to get something to go under the tree (and buying directly from an individual artist sometimes does take a little longer). But just because you may have waited doesn’t mean you can’t still give the gift of the arts for the holidays, and you can even skip the wrapping paper!

Peace of the week, Dec 16

Being solitary is being alone well: being alone luxuriously immersed in doings of your own choice, aware of the fullness of your won presence rather than of the absence of others. Because solitude is an achievement. — Alice Koller

Give More Art

Like many people we know, we have cut back on the number of presents under the tree. But by being mindful, and buying only things created by artists that we know – art objects, music, a night out at the theater, a meal at a friends restaurant – we are still giving plenty of gifts. Continue reading »
