Make artists part of your holiday tradition!

Last year between Thanksgiving and Christmas I encouraged you to “Buy Personal” and embarked on introducing you to some of our friends. It was so much fun and a great way to spend some time thinking about and being thankful for all of the amazingly talented friends we have. This year I am no less thankful and it is no less important that you support independent artists of all varieties while making your holiday plans. But I’ve got to tell you, that was a herculean task to take on while still maintaining my studio practice. So this year I have chosen to spend more time working on my new series while reintroducing you to the fantastic artists you met last year. Continue reading »

“When you rise in the morning, give thanks for the light, for your life, for your strength. Give thanks for your food and for the joy of living. If you see no reason to give thanks, the fault lies in yourself.”
Tecumseh

Reasons 3-11 for hosting a workshop

Wow! That was fun!

Sarah and I

Some really talented artists gathered in my studio this past weekend to learn the technique of Digital Fresco from Oklahoma City based artist Sarah Hearn. I was so happy to host them all, but a big shout out to the travelers – Phil Smith from Portland, Kina Crow from Pittsburgh, and Lisa Burge from Taos. I am honored that you trusted me and my vision enough to travel so far to spend the weekend playing and learning in my studio. And to my Kansas City friends: Chris, Kelly, Alison, Laura and Jose – I look forward to seeing you soon. And, of course, a big thank you to Sarah for generously sharing her knowledge and skill with us. I can’t think of a better group of artists and teacher to launch my new series of workshops with! Laurie Anderson and Lou Reed

With the recent passing of Lou Reed and the eloquent farewell that Laurie Anderson wrote to her husband, I have been thinking a lot about the last time I saw Laurie perform and how much she has to teach us. (As I must admit, Laurie has had a much bigger impact on me than Lou Reed ever did.) Continue reading »

“When I’m ready to make a photograph, I think I quite obviously see in my minds eye something that is not literally there in the true meaning of the word. I’m interested in something which is built up from within, rather than just extracted from without.” —  Ansel Adams

“Our language has wisely sensed the two sides of being alone. It has created the word loneliness to express the pain of being alone. And it has created the word solitude to express the glory of being alone.” —  Paul Tillich
